Looking for cool Czech software ? Michael Polák ( ) Přečteno 190116x, 23 komentářů, rubrika: (en) Archive If you think that applications like Arachne or Links are cool, you should
take a look at new 3D game called Mafia. The only problem is that it requres Win32 to run... :-( Mafia is name of long-expected 3D game developed by
Czech company Illusion Softworks, located in Brno. Some tima ago, I had chance to talk to one of Mafia game developers at one party in private wine cellar at south Moravia, where lot of quality Moravian wine was involved :-). I asked for Linux version of the game engine, but I was told, that unfortunately the investors were not interested in releasing Linux port (while developers would be glad to release it...). But you can try to colletively e-mail-bomb them,
if you would like to see Linux version (don't waste time with requests for DOS version - nothing like OpenGL is available for DOS ;-)
You can visit offical homepage in English, offical homepage in Czech language), or UK based site Mafiaworld (in English). Game screenshots are impressive, it looks like realtime 3D gaming is getting closer to computer-rendered scenes in commercial movies...
Game was developed by Czech programmers, which is something I am proud of. Unlike companies based in Sillicon Valley, local software companies can't afford to employ programmers from all over the world - so masterpieces like fulscreen graphical Links browser for Linux or Mafia game are hopefuly
signs for global market to recognize Czech software developers as serious players (and maybe even threat to Microsoft one day... ok, I know one of most important
applications of 2002, OpenOffice.org, is based on StarOffice, which was developed mainly by German programmers... ;-)
Anyway, make ready for East-Asia manufactured hardware - powered by Central-European software ;-)
